Steel, Foam + Stone Workshop
Mick Kennedy
This workshop introduced students to a range of materials and processes in the Metals Lab. Students received an in-depth introduction to the tools and operations in the Metals Lab. Students worked on a short project which will demonstrated how metals work can be both an independent design operation as well as serving as components for bringing together fabrication elements from various operations in the FabLab. The first workshop introduced students to working with a 2D fabrication jig to assemble a 3D object: a chair with upholstered seat and back. The second workshop introduced students to working with a 3D fabrication jig to assemble a 3D object: a small tea table (to accompany the chairs) with a stone top. Workshop skills included: Steel cutting, forming and assembly processes and opportunities. MIG welding steel, use of hand and belt grinders for finishing metals use of tap and die for assembling / disassembling components, working with cushion foam and simple upholstery and preparing files and assisting in the water jet cutting of stone.
