Screen Divider Workshop

Tsz Yan Ng

During this pandemic, we are constantly on Zoom and negotiating safe distances with others. This workshop aimed to bring material making to enliven our surrounding and to make it easy to communicate to others where our safe distance needs to be. Using sheet materials such as Bristol (for prototyping) and Yupo (final production), students fabricated either a backdrop (hung) or a screen divider (free-standing) using Zund cutting. Students designed and prototyped components that can be assembled easily, focusing on jointing details and material behavior when aggregated. Issues of tolerances to fabrication/crafting, porosity, and perception were explored.
